Education & Experience

Myisha completed three years of college as a Biology major with hopes of becoming a physician in Obstetrics and Gynecology, yet took one Psychology course, becoming intrigued with the workings of the human mind. This led to both a undergraduate and graduate degree in Psychology. She applied to University of South Florida for Mental Health Counseling. However, after being accepted in to the Mental Health Counseling program, the University informed her of a new Marriage and Family Therapy program. Through prayer and Faith, she applied for the program and became one of eight to start USF's first MFT Program. There she obtained a Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and was selected as a fellow with the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy Minority Fellowship Program. In addition, she simultaneously obtained a graduate certificate in Addictions and Substance Abuse Counseling. Myisha remains a life-long learner through formal education, personal experience, community, and biblical wisdom!

Myisha's experience is derived from various backgrounds to include nonprofit, private practice, and the government sector. Working in nonprofit, she worked with children, teenagers, and single mothers through trauma-related concerns. She later opened up her own private practice and homeschooled one of her children. Though nonprofit work is near and dear to her heart, private practice allotted her the ability to practice what she preaches, living a Faith-filled and Family-Focused lifestyle. Soon after she begin serving in the government. There she worked with Veterans and their family's. Working with this population allowed her to apply her own unique experiences as a military spouse and utilize new therapeutic approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Couple Therapy (CBCT) to tackle unique mental health challenges with Veterans and their loved ones.
A Word fromMyisha

Hey family! Ironically, I could have never imagined that introverted-Myisha would possess a career in counseling. As a child, my introverted personality was heavily stigmatized and often times I that I was the issue. I had no idea that God was preparing me in ways that I could never imagine to serve his Kingdom. Let me explain, my gift of introverted-ness cultivated a person who values patience, is quick to listen and slow to speak, who uses self-awareness to manage emotions, and one who observes body language with a high accuracy rate due to the innate characteristics of a true introvert...sounds like characteristics for a great counselor, wouldn't you say! :)

Marriage and Family therapy in particular has been a blessing as it has granted me the opportunity to not only serve people in a way that empowers their mental health journeys, but to also help them connect with their loved ones on a deeper level. This field of work has also allowed me the advantage to better manage some of my own stormy seasons. Having to recoup from Covid and combat mental health challenges that my own children were going through, from social anxiety to battles with neurodivergence. In addition to the break-down of my own marriage began to take a toll on me and my family, yet my background in mental health provided relief in regards to awareness of what battles we were up against and how to obtain the help we needed. Although there have been mountain top moments, there has been many seasons spent in the valleys. Those seasons of feeling low were more encouraging than discouraging. If anything, they woke me up! How can I help other family's face the inevitable sufferings that life bring?! I know all too well, that even if an individual is experiencing difficulties, someone else is affected by that experience. This is why I use a relational viewpoint to create systems that not only safe guard the individual facing challenges, but also loved ones connected to them. Whether it helping couples solidify a firm foundation to build on or helping to restructure family dynamics that makes room for deeper connections, I pride myself in encompassing formal education, personal experience, and biblical wisdom to guide my clients towards solutions...and healing!
